What is Scaling and Root Planing?

At times proper brushing and flossing aren’t enough and when this is the case, gum disease can occur.  Depending on the extent to how severe the gum disease has become, a dentist may recommend scaling and root planing.

Scaling and Root Planing

Simply put, scaling and root planing is a procedure for deep cleaning below the gumline to treat gum diseases.  Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, is the main cause of gum disease.  As it is always forming on your teeth, the bacteria in plaque can cause gums to become inflamed if it isn’t cleaned well.  If this happens, gums will begin to pull away from teeth, which causes pockets that plaque can be trapped in.  Once this happens, the plaque will no longer be able to be cleaned with normal brushing or flossing.

The Procedure

To reduce discomfort, the procedure may require a local anesthetic.  Next, a cleaning instrument is used to remove any plaque and tartar beneath the gum line.  Finally, the root surfaces of teeth are planed and smoothed to allow gum tissue to properly heal and reattach to affected teeth.

Once the procedure is complete, a special oral healthcare routine may be prescribed to help with the healing process.  For infection and pain prevention or aid in healing, a prescription of a pill or mouth rinse are common.  After some time, another visit will be scheduled to see how the gums have healed.
